Tveter Records Another Top-Five Finish
In GP3 Feature Race at Hungarian GP

MOGYORÓD, Hungary, Aug. 1 — American Ryan Tveter recorded two solid, points-paying finishes in the GP3 series doubleheader at the Hungaroring last weekend, finishing fifth on Saturday and sixth on Sunday prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix Formula 1 race.

Tveter, of Oyster Bay, N.Y., was tenth in points going into the weekend. He moved up into a tie for eighth with the stellar showing, earning 14 points.

Tveter posted the best qualifying effort for the four-driver Trident squad when he placed sixth in qualifying on Saturday morning with a time of 1:31.832 in the late stages of that session. Then he passed the driver who is second in the point standings, Callum Ilott, in Turn 1 on the final lap of Saturday’s race to earn a top-five finish.

He started sixth in that 22-lap race, right behind Ilott, but he didn’t get the opportunity to try to pass him right away because his new teammate, David Beckmann, and Joey Mawson passed him on the first lap to push him back to eighth, and he had to lift to avoid making contact.

Tveter set his fastest lap of the race on lap four with a 1:35.918, which was the fourth-fastest lap of anyone on that particular trip around the 2.722-mile, 14-turn road course.

Ten laps later he had to miss an accident, as Jake Hughes and Mawson tangled in Turn 2 in front of him. He missed them both, which vaulted Tveter back to where he started, sixth place. It also gave him the opportunity to determine where his best opportunity was to pass Ilott, and he successfully completed that pass in Turn 1 on the last lap for fifth to give the Formula 1 fans on hand some excitement during the non-stop race.

He started fourth in Sunday morning’s 17-lap race, but he was boxed in early and passed by points leader Anthoine Hubert, Beckmann and Leonardo Pulcini. He once again set his fastest race lap of 1:36.463 on lap four, and began to cut Beckmann’s advantage. On lap eight Beckmann had a 0.8-second gap over Tveter, but by lap 14 Beckmann’s mirrors were full of Tveter’s No. 7, which carries the colors of The Disruptive, Stilo, and his charity partners — Right To Play, MTV Staying Alive, and the Lessons for Life Foundation.

Tveter muscled his way past Beckmann working lap 16 to secure sixth. He almost got fifth too, as he was just 0.2 behind the fifth-place finisher, Juan Manuel Correa, at the checkered.

The next doubleheader is Aug. 24-26 at Spa in Belgium, followed promptly by the Monza, Italy rounds Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

“Hungary was a really positive weekend for us,” Tveter said. “The car felt great from the beginning and qualifying was super close, but I was happy to be the top Trident driver and just a few tenths from the fastest in P6.

“Tire degradation was a big unknown heading into the races, but the team did a great job setting up the car to look after the tires and we really had a big advantage over the rest of the field, especially in Race 1.

“I had a great start in Race 2, but unfortunately got a bit boxed in at the second corner after a few guys ran wide and gained an advantage. I had to back out to avoid crashing and ended up coming out in P6.

“Overall, despite missing out on the podium I’m happy with the points and I had some great overtakes on a track where it’s notoriously difficult to pass. It was great also to have the contest winners for Right To Play in attendance; they really enjoyed their weekend. I think we’ve found a sweet spot with the car so I’m looking forward to a little break these next couple weeks and then it’s back to Europe and back to work for Spa and Monza.”
